Christian Andersen in 1837. In 1909 Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen was so impressed by the story that he ordered a statue to be done. The mermaid sits on a granite stone at Langelinie Pier in Copenhagen Harbour, wistfully looking towards the human world. Since September 2006, The Little Mermaid has a new post-modern sister. A few hundred meters away from the original, The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid, by Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard, sits on an islet of stone in the water. After visiting the statue, pick up a book of the fairytale from one of the bookstores in the city.
