A must-see is the historical wall that separated the East from the West. The longest part of the Berlin Wall, called the East Side Gallery, is considered a national monument since 1991. The 1,3 km long section contains approximately 106 paintings by international artists. Enjoy the magnificent view of Berlin from the 368 meter high Fernsehturm and try not to get dizzy in the rotating restaurant at the top of the TV tower.

Charlottenburg is recognized as Berlin’s premiere destination for antiquities and sight-seeing. Visit the stunning garden of the Charlottenburg Castle built in the baroque style in 1701. Have your picture taken with animals in the background in the Berlin Zoological Garden, the oldest Zoo in Germany, with almost 1 500 different species and around 16 000 animals. A different way of discovering the cruel history of Berlin is visiting The Hohenschoenhausen Prison, a secret Stasi prison that was used to house political prisoners from the end of World War II up to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Shopping is great in Berlin, which has become an important center of specialized shops and products that are hard to find in other places. Approximately half the shops around Kurfürstendamm and the Tauentzienstraße are filled with clothes and fashion jewellery. You can find luxury item in Friedrichstrasse or acquire more economical items in one of the shopping centers like the Schönhauser Allee in the Schönhauser Allee Arcaden.

Germany is famous for its big variety of sausages and cheese, but also for other dishes like the Schweinebraten (roasted pork in gravy, served with boiled potatoes), Goulasch (fried beef and pork cubes stewed with onions and red or green pepper, served with boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes or noodles) or Wienerschnitzel (a thin veal fillet, covered in bread crumbs and fried, served with chips and salad). The Asian and Indian cuisine have, like the Italian, become very popular in Germany, and consequently the city offers a great selection of Asian, Indian and Italian restaurants.

Tiergarten is a large park in the heart of Berlin, a place to sit and relax for a while after shopping. In summer, get ready for a dip in the water at one of Berlin’s popular beaches. The Wannsee Beach is the largest inland beach in Europe, and surrounded by forest. Don’t be surprised to see people completely naked on the beach, as nudism is popular here. Clothes-free beaches are marked with the three letters FKK that stand for Freikörperkultur (“free body culture”).

Start sampling the famous night life of Berlin in one of the cocktail bars, lounges or after-work-clubs. Have your cocktails on top of a skyscraper, have a glass of red wine in a jazz cellar or finish the night in one of the trendy nightclubs; in the Berlin night life, there’s something for everyone.
